Yogyakarta, « Ayodhya’s work » in Indonesian, located in south center of Java Island, is well known to be a staple place of classic art and traditional Javanese culture. Going to Yogyakarta is going for adventure.
“Yogya” as it is commonly called, quickly became travelers’ favorite stop.
Besides the activities described above, many others are proposed in the city of Yogyakarta. Go to Kraton, palace of royal family, where you will learn more about the Javanese culture. Have a walk in the superb Taman Sari water castle or blindfold yourselves and have a shot at crossing a Beringin tree. According to the legend, your dearest wish will be granted if you succeed!
Street Food at Yogyakarta
If you plan to have a custom made tour created for yourself, the first thing we recommend is to walk down the main street, Jalan Malioboro. You will see its colors, its life, it shops and its traditional market, Pasar Breingharjo. You should go there at the beginning of the day to witness all of its diversity. The countless stands you will face are an unprecedented spectacle. Textiles on ground floor, food on upper floors, do not leave without bags of local fruits to make yourself a salad back at the hotel. Dragon fruit and jackfruit are our favorite ones!
At the end of the day, take a cab to reach Parangtritis Beach and enjoy an amazing sunset. On your way back, for people who like to party, have a ride in one of those flashy nightclub cabs found in Alun-Alun Selatan Kraton district. Good vibes guaranteed! But whether you like this concept of disco cabs or not, you must pass by the hundreds of stalls along Jalan Malioboro which would offer fantastic food. Yogyakarta, “street food” at its best!
Yogyakarta, a place to share
As you walk in the streets of Yogyakarta, you might meet young students who will humbly ask you if you have a little time for them. If you accept, you will become a local star for few moments. The students will take their phones and cameras to shoot and record an impromptu interview. Also, as soon as they will meet an occidental, they will take a small piece of paper out of their pockets. The paper carries questions to ask. They always go out prepared :) A unique and enjoyable experience thanks to a nice moment of exchange with always smiling and curious local people!
It will take you more than one day to see everything at Yogya. A second one will be needed to go out from Yogyakarta and visit Prambanan Temple (Hindu)
and Borobudur Temple (Buddhist)
, crown jewels of the Indonesian culture. Articles are dedicated to these places on our site. Yogyakarta, city and region, it is a place incredibly rich in culture, tradition and discoveries. A must see for travelers willing to go to Indonesia !
For amateurs of nature, add a third day to your itinerary to go to the famous volcano, Mount Merapi. You don’t want to go alone ? Be patient, we will soon plan little group trip to discover Java just like you were in solo! ☺
