Located in the center of Flores island, Kelimutu Volcano displays three lakes with diverse and changing colors!
The black Tiwu Ata Mbupu (“Old person’s lake”) is the westernmost of the three. The Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (“Young men and womens’ lake”) is turquoise blue. He is separated from Tiwu Ata Polo (“bewitched lake” or “enchanted”) by a thin wall. This lake is red/brown or green, according to the period of the year.
The Kelimutu lakes and ancestral judges
According to the ancestral belief, the souls of the dead had to be judged by Konde Ratu, keeper of the Spirit’s door. Kondo Ratu led the souls to one of the three lakes according to acts done during mortal lives. This concept is quite similar to the Christian tradition (Purgatory, Paradise, Hell).
Geochemical studies managed to explain the originality of the colors of the three lakes. Indeed, the combination of the mineral composition and oxygen level makes unlikely shades for an amazing spectacle! However, science doesn’t explain why and how the colors are changing so often and so unpredictably.
Sunrise on the volcanic lakes
In order to see these amazing lakes, many travelers do the trip to see the sunrise. After several journeys there, we can say that it is not the best of choices. As majestuous as a sunrise can be, you will have to wait for a long time (2h+) for the sun to rise in the Flores blue sky to enlighten the waters. This is the only way to admire the greatness of the site. So, take this advice: go there early, in the early morning but not at sunrise. You will save few hours of sleep and this will make your trip eternally unforgettable.
