A few days in the middle of turquoise waters and turtles! What a unique feeling that is!
Situated North West of Lombok in the Lombok Strait, Gili Air, Gili Meno & Gili Trawangan, aka Gili Islands, are famous for their perfect combination of romance, wildlife, nature and parties!
These 3 minuscule islands are extensions of the oceanic crust (volcanic islands) on the lithosphere.
“Gili” means “small island”. Therefore almost all small islands surrounding Lombok have “gili” in their names, “Pulau” being the term used for proper islands. “Air” means water, named due to its fresh subterranean waters and being the only one among the three having this feature. Nowadays the word “Gili” is almost exclusively used these 3 beauties.
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno & Gili Air
Gili Trawangan is the largest and most visited, known as the party one or “Gili T”. The first of three islands to attract tourists from all over the world thanks to its cheap accommodation, no police and all-night parties as the norm.
Gili Meno is the the one known for its wild nature and unexplored lands. Very quiet, with beautiful beaches and landscapes. It is a perfect gateway for walking and relaxing activities.
Gili Air is the closest to Lombok Island and combines all activities that can be found on the other 2. It is the best option for families and couples in search of a quiet and wonderful paradisiac island, yet fully alive. Gili Air is also the island were the local community is the most developed and it is a real treat to spend time among them! Especially when you understand that their love for the island is the reason why all motored vehicle are prohibited. Bikes and carriages only!
These paradisiac islands were the last stop from our second Indonesian tour! Admiring wild nature was breathtaking. Enjoying local food was immensely delicious. Snorkeling with turtles and a multitude of fish species, life and color right under your eyes, was eternal.
All three islands have diving centers and are famous for their corals and multitude of fish species. However, after decades of dynamite fishing, the now-preserved marine life is not as impressive as Bunaken Marine Park or Raja Ampat. Though, snorkeling and day trips scuba diving are a common activity there: you can see turtles and marine life as often as you want and right off the beach!
If you are a romantic person, you’ll find the perfect activity for you and your loved one: watching sunrise (on the East side from behind of Rinjani Volcano of Lombok) before your breakfast or sunset (on West side from Bali) before an amazing dinner with local fresh fish, chilled live music a great cocktail and local hospitality! Highly recommended ☺
